Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure that reshapes and/or resizes the nose to improve its appearance, correct functional issues, or both. This procedure can address a variety of concerns, including nasal size, shape, bridge, tip, nostrils, and overall symmetry.
Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are individuals in good overall health, without serious medical conditions, who are seeking to improve the appearance or function of their nose. It is important that patients have realistic expectations about the results, understand the limitations of the surgery, and are emotionally mature enough to handle the changes.
Prior to your consultation, compile a list of questions or concerns you may have about the procedure. It is also helpful to gather any relevant medical records and a history of past surgeries. You may want to bring photos of noses you find attractive to help communicate your desired outcome with your surgeon.
There are two main techniques for rhinoplasty: open and closed. In open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella (the tissue that separates the nostrils), allowing the surgeon greater access to the nasal structures. In closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scarring. The choice of technique depends on the patient's specific needs and the surgeon's preference.
The duration of the surgery varies based on the complexity of the procedure but typically ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours. It is usually performed under general anesthesia, although some minor procedures may use local anesthesia with sedation.
Most patients experience swelling and bruising for 1-2 weeks following the procedure. A nasal splint is typically worn for the 1-2 weeks to protect and support the nose. Patients are generally able to return to work or school within 2 weeks, but should avoid strenuous activities for at least 3-4 weeks. Full recovery and final results may take up to a year as the nose continues to heal and settle into its new shape.
As with any surgery, there are risks involved in rhinoplasty. These may include bleeding, infection, anesthesia complications, scarring, nasal septal perforation, and dissatisfaction with the cosmetic outcome. It is important to choose a board-certified rhinoplasty specialist with extensive experience to minimize these risks.
The cost of rhinoplasty varies depending on factors such as the surgeon's experience, geographic location, and the complexity of the procedure. Insurance may cover a portion of the costs if the surgery is performed for medical reasons, such as to correct a deviated septum or other functional issues. It is best to discuss the cost with your surgeon during the consultation.
To achieve natural-looking results, it is crucial to select a skilled, board-certified rhinoplasty specialist with a thorough understanding of facial anatomy and aesthetics. A customized surgical plan tailored to your unique facial features and goals will help to ensure that your new nose appears harmonious and well-balanced with the rest of your face.
Revision rates for rhinoplasty is about 10% worldwide. Sometimes the solution may be a simple touch up. In other cases it may warrant a redo. It is important to maintain communication channels with your surgeon so as to find the most expedient and efficient solution to address your dissatisfaction.
The results of rhinoplasty are permanent. However, the appearance of your nose may change slightly over time due to aging or other factors. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help preserve the results.
In some cases, rhinoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with sedation. However, this will depend on the extent of the procedure and the patient's individual needs.

In closed rhinoplasty, there are no visible scars as the incisions are inside the nostrils. In open rhinoplasty, there is a small, often barely noticeable scar on the columella. Proper post-operative care and following your surgeon's advice can minimize scarring.
